Independence Community College (ICC) proudly presented the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice Awards at its regularly scheduled board meeting on February 17th. These awards recognize extraordinary individuals who consistently demonstrate a commitment to serving others and making a positive impact on their community.
The Drum Major for Justice Award is presented annually to one ICC student, one ICC employee, and one community member from Independence, Kansas. This year’s recipients are:
Jason Steadman (ICC Employee):
Coach “Jai” Steadman embodies the spirit of service, consistently going above and beyond for his colleagues and student-athletes. He and his athletes volunteer for the Neewollah Trunk or Treat event and the ICC Pirate Harvest Festival. He also hosts a kids’ game for the Ponca tribe, providing children with a Christmas gift and the opportunity to watch a free D1 game. Coach Steadman is a true asset to ICC and the wider community.
Don Farthing (Community Member):
Mr. Farthing has dedicated decades to serving the community through his tireless commitment to music education in Southeast Kansas and beyond. As the former band director at IHS, he instilled a love of music in countless students. Even in retirement, Mr. Farthing remains an active force for good, generously sharing his time and wisdom to support those around him.
Tinevimbo Makurira (ICC Student):
Tinevimbo consistently goes above and beyond to serve others in her peer tutoring position and as a student. Known for her positive attitude and willingness to help, Tiney is a valuable member of the peer tutoring team and the ICC campus community. She is a natural leader with a bright future ahead of her.

"Jason, Don, and Tinevimbo exemplify the values of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and inspire us all to strive for a more just and giving community."
