Newland Endows Scholarship After Resignation from Board of Trustees

Ashley Newland, an Independence Community College Board of Trustees member, has submitted her resignation, effective September 20, 2022. Newland currently serves as Vice Chair and has served on the ICC Board of Trustees since she was voted in January 2020.

"On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Independence Community College, we thank Trustee Newland for her service and longstanding commitment to the College," said Dr. Vincent Bowhay, ICC President. "We greatly appreciate the leadership, insight, and expertise she has provided as Vice Chair of the Board."

Newland graduated from ICC in 2005 and was selected as the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award Winner. Alongside her seat on the Board, she served on the Audit Committee and continues to be a strong advocate for student education.

"Ashley's commitment to the best education for ICC students is unmatched," explained Cynthia Sherwood, ICC Board Chair. "We will miss her advice on fiscal matters and her straight talk on important issues."

Newland's commitment to student success will continue to live on through the generous endowment she has founded with the College. The Ashley Newland Endowed Scholarship through the ICC Foundation provides scholarship dollars to single parents (regardless of gender) with dependent children residing with them. Scholarship recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA with preference given to students majoring in accounting or veterinary nursing. The Newland Scholarship is available for part-time and full-time students.

"I've enjoyed this opportunity to serve my community and to provide valuable financial guidance to staff and cabinet members," explained Newland. "Volunteering to be on the board of a taxing district helps individuals better understand the difficulties of governmental budgeting and finance."

The College dictates that appointment by the remaining trustees will fill any community college trustee vacancy. More information regarding applications will become available after the September 19, 2022, Board of Trustees meeting. Questions should be directed to Cherie Stockton, ICC Board Clerk at cstockton@indycc.edu.

"During my time serving on the Board of Trustees, I have had the opportunity to see the positive transformations made by our new President, Dr. Vincent Bowhay, along with all the work his team has accomplished," concluded Newland. "I strongly recommend everyone volunteer their time at least once to serve on these types of boards."
