ICC Music Department to Host KSHSAA Regional Music Festival

Independence, Kansas — March 27, 2017 — Independence Community College (ICC) will host the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Regional Music Festival for solos and small ensembles from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, April 1 on the college’s campus.

Vocalists and instrumentalists from 25 different high schools – ranging from approximately 200-300 students—from across the region will be present at the competition. ICC will be utilizing the fine arts and academic buildings as well as the gymnasium for performances.

ICC music students will be involved in almost every aspect of the competition including administrating, hall monitoring and acting as judge assistants. Instructors Eric and Michelle Rutherford took on the role of planning and organizing the event with assistance from Associate Professor of Music, Matt Carter.

“It’s a big deal that we’re getting to host this competition,” said Eric Rutherford. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to highlight our campus and facilities and to serve the high school music programs in the area.”

Individuals or groups receiving a first division rating at regional music festivals will qualify for participation at state music festivals.
