A Message from Dr. Cynthia Sherwood, ICC Board Chair, on Consolidation Conversation

College Sign

Tonight the Board of Trustees voted to approve a Resolution of Intent to explore consolidation with Coffeyville Community College. Discussions about this process have been ongoing with the ICC and CCC Board of Trustees for over a year. This was not an easy decision; however, when considering multiple factors, such as the cumulative downward enrollment trend for the past decade in many Kansas community colleges, and the pressure from the Kansas legislature being placed on institutions serving Southeast Kansas, we feel that it is in the best interest of our institution and local community to journey down this path. Together, we can retain what makes ICC so special while positioning our new institution for adaptability and growth. Our combined institutions will serve even more students while helping create efficiencies for our community as we continue to innovate, progress and educate.

Independence Community College has $30 million dollars in economic impact for northern Montgomery County. In addition, ICC provides wonderful cultural experiences for the entire community.

Regarding next steps, the ICC and CCC Boards will contact the Kansas Board of Regents to notify them of our intent to proceed with a consolidation. They require us to name the date of election for consolidation, composition of the Board of Trustees and what number of Trustees there will be and the description of member districts. These specific decisions will be negotiated between the two Boards and then sent to the Board of Regents to get their approval for a special public election. The ballot will say: “Shall Independence Community College and Coffeyville Community College consolidate into a united community college system?” If the voters in both districts approve the consolidation, the decisions that will need to be made are numerous.

We believe that there will be a lot of advantages for Montgomery County students. In fiscal year 2024, Montgomery County provided educational opportunities and experiences for over 2,800 students. This decision was not easy for the Board. After much conversation, we think it will be best for our community and students.

We invite feedback from our faculty, staff, and students and will communicate as decisions are made as we know that this will be a lengthy process.

We truly appreciate your understanding and your ongoing commitment to serving students. Thank you for all that you do!
