College Mourns the Loss of Beloved Supporter Ray Woods

Independence Community College (ICC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Ray Woods, a cherished supporter and advocate of the college and community. Woods, age 82, passed away on August 28th at Poblacion Beach near Bacolod, Philippines. His passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to service, business, and community development.

Ray Woods, a fourth-generation owner of Woods Lumber Company, took over the family business in 1970, expanding its reach across Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma. He also owned Independence Ready Mix, contributing significantly to local economic growth.

Beyond business, Ray was a dedicated philanthropist, supporting numerous community projects, including the Central Park Sports Complex, where a youth ball diamond bears the Woods name. His contributions were honored with the Montgomery County Action Council's Perl Schmidt Golden Shovel Award in June.

Active in Rotary International and a founding member of the Montgomery County Action Council, Ray's lifelong dedication to service began with his time as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines, a country he continued to visit throughout his life.

Ray’s dedication to Independence Community College was steadfast. He had a special place in his heart for the Pirate Pantry, a food pantry on campus that ensures students have access to essential resources, allowing them to focus on their education. In recognition of his contributions, the community meeting room at ICC's West Campus was named in his honor—the Woods Room.

Woods spent his later years traveling the world, visiting all seven continents and every country. He divided his time between his homes in Independence and Thailand. He left Independence in early August, en route to Thailand, when he passed away unexpectedly in the Philippines.

"Ray Woods was an extraordinary individual who touched the lives of many through his generosity, leadership, and vision," said Cody Oates, Executive Director for the ICC Foundation. "His impact on ICC and the wider community will be felt for generations to come. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Ray Woods leaves behind a legacy of community spirit, philanthropy, and dedication to the growth and success of Independence.
