The Revolutionists is a powerful and thought-provoking play that delves into the lives of four remarkable women during the French Revolution. Through their intersecting stories, the play explores themes of activism, feminism, and the pursuit of justice in the face of adversity.

“The story takes place in 1793 Paris, during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Our four gutsy women include Olympe de Gouges, a playwright hoping to use her craft to arouse the French nation; Marianne Angelle, a spy from the Caribbean seeking political help; Charlotte Corday, a fearless young assassin; and (trumpets please) Marie Antoinette, the queen who dares to seek friendship before her certain death,” explained Giles. “Sadly, all but one woman die by the guillotine, yet each accomplishes something remarkable during her tragically shortened life. We admire each woman’s fierce determination, and we laugh with them all at the tragic absurdity and injustice of their situation.”

This production is presented in conjunction with the prestigious William Inge Theatre Festival.

“In this drama Gunderson teaches us about courage in the face of terror, friendship in the face of absurdity, and commitment to feminist principles in the face of their frenzied, male-dominated society,” said Giles. “ It is my sincerest hope that through these different women, the audience will hear the enduring call for us to find our revolutionary spirits and take up the fight for true egalite, each in our own way.  I hope we also recognize the need for collective action and alliances in our own modern lives.  Across the world and in a different time, we are like Olympe, Marianne, Charlotte, and Marie, striving to make life better through true equality for all humans.”
