During the College's Board of Trustees meeting on February 19, 2024, ICC President Dr. Vincent Bowhay, EdD, announced his resignation, effective June 30, 2024.
“While this decision was hard, it is the right decision for me at this time,” expressed Bowhay. “As I reflect on my time at Independence Community College, I could not be prouder of the accomplishments of our Pirate family.”
Dr. Bowhay, who initially joined ICC in November 2019 as the Vice President for Student Affairs and later assumed the role of the College's 16th president in April 2021, has led ICC through significant advancements during his tenure.
Under his leadership, ICC expanded services for students, including initiatives like the food pantry, on-campus health center, and telehealth services. He also oversaw modernization efforts, technological upgrades, and infrastructure enhancements, such as the installation of a new HVAC system and the establishment of numerous scholarship endowments. Dr. Bowhay secured substantial grants for ICC, including a $2.2 million Title III grant and a $1 million grant from the Department of Education, among others. Additionally, he spearheaded projects like the establishment of the campus Veteran's Center and the construction of a welding facility.
"On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Bowhay for his dedicated service and transformative leadership during his tenure as president of Independence Community College,” said Cynthia Sherwood, Chair of the ICC Board of Trustees. “Dr. Bowhay's unwavering commitment to student success and his visionary initiatives have propelled ICC to new heights, leaving an indelible mark on our institution and the communities we serve. As we embark on the search for his successor, we remain deeply appreciative of Dr. Bowhay's profound impact and wish him the very best in his future endeavors."
