ICC Upward Bound Program Empowers High School Students for College Success

The ICC Upward Bound program, an intensive pre-college academic initiative, is making a significant impact on the lives of high school students by providing comprehensive support and resources to help them succeed academically and prepare for higher education. Fully funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Upward Bound is situated on the Independence Community College Main Campus.

“Each year we're able to serve 65 students from 5 local high schools in Independence, Cherryvale, Fredonia, Neodesha, and Sedan,” said Lindsey Donovan, Upward Bound Director. “The whole purpose of our program is to provide pre-college students with the resources and support they need to successfully finish high school and then thrive in college. We help with tutoring, financial aid, ACT preparation, college applications, campus visits, cultural trips, major and career exploration, social skills, and so much more. Dedicated staff members meet with students 2-3 times a month throughout the school year, fostering a supportive environment for academic and personal growth.”

One highlight of Upward Bound's program is Summerfest, a unique summer residential and academic experience that plays a crucial role in easing students' transition to college life. During Summerfest, students reside on the college campus from Sunday night to Thursday afternoon, giving them a taste of college living while still being able to return home on weekends. The program allows students to familiarize themselves with the college environment, make new connections, and gradually prepare for the upcoming challenges of higher education.

This year's Summerfest, themed "Back to the 90s," was a resounding success. Resident Assistants (RAs) curated engaging activities, such as "Survival of the Vid-est," where students formed groups and created their own music videos set to 90s songs. The results were widely praised and shared on social media platforms. Another highlight was the 90s-style Glow in the Dark dance, jointly hosted with Neosho County Community College's Upward Bound program.

“It was a great way for our students to let loose and have some fun while also meeting new people,” explained Donovan.

Throughout the Summerfest, the growth and development of participating students were evident to the Upward Bound staff. Students from different schools formed close friendships, formerly reserved individuals came out of their shells, and those uncertain about their future plans began developing detailed strategies for college, car ownership, and independent living. The positive impact of Summerfest on students' lives and aspirations has been truly remarkable.

"We are thrilled to witness the transformation and growth of our students during Summerfest. Upward Bound continues to be a beacon of hope for students seeking a brighter future, and we are eager to welcome new applicants for the next academic year," concluded Donovan.

Upward Bound is now accepting applications for the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year. High school students who wish to avail themselves of this life-changing opportunity can apply online at https://botform.compansol.com/202405520027844.
