College Honors Three at The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major Awards Presentation

ICC hosted the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice Awards Luncheon on February 10 in the Cyber Café. The award recognizes extraordinary individuals who consistently go above and beyond to serve others but are seldom recognized for their work. The award is presented to one ICC student, one ICC employee, and one Independence, KS, community member.

Student
Logan Huser

His nominator described Logan as a humbling serving student who goes beyond what is typically expected within the classroom. Stays on campus all day to study, rehearse, practice, and help staff and faculty. Logan stands up for students who have their own personal struggles going on. He is well aware of his classmates, yet he does not allow his classmates to be treated as anything less than well-respected students and human beings. Logan has shown tremendous leadership skills throughout the ICC classroom. He is quick to help random students in the library, where he studies and spends most of the day. He is quick to give a listening ear and stay back after class to help those who are struggling academically and personally.

Staff
Bridget Carson

“Bridget is a team player and supports students in achieving their goals. She is always willing to assist students in helping ensure they can be successful when they leave ICC,” explains her nominator. “She has demonstrated an ability to be flexible and take on additional projects outside of her normal workload. She is committed to sharing her passion for music with students and the greater community. Bridget also serves as a foundational pillar of the Judicial Committee. She has attended numerous trainings to ensure that she is well versed and current on best practices on how to serve as an advisor for students in the disciplinary process. She has always shown to be very open-minded and compassionate toward students. Her ability to view situations from multiple angles and through diverse viewpoints helps make her a valuable member of the ICC community.”

Community Member
Melissa Johnson

“Melissa has been involved in the Independence community for as long as I can remember. Through her work, she has had the opportunity to lift many local individuals and help them become better community members,” explains her nominator. “She can be found participating in many local organizations and, as a result, has dedicated numerous hours to improving Independence. Her passion for promoting change in the community can be seen through her involvement with the various Leadership Independence classes. In a time when the world needs more positive role models and leaders, Melissa can be seen leading by example. Melissa is a shining example of what it means ‘to dedicate yourself to something greater than you.’”
