Inge Play to be Featured at The 40th William Inge Theatre Festival

THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS

"Independence Community College is proud to once again partner with the William Inge Festival Foundation to honor the legacy of one of America's greatest playwrights," said ICC President, Dr. Vincent Bowhay. "I am proud to see this important program celebrate its 40th anniversary on campus this year."

Every 10th anniversary, the William Inge Theatre Festival chooses to focus solely on honoring playwright, William Inge. As part of the celebration, Paul Molnar, Director of Theatre Performance at ICC, will be directing Inge's Tony Nominated play, THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS, which will run April 19th -22nd, 2023 in the William Inge Theatre. This play originally ran on Broadway from December 1957 - January 1959 directed by Elia Kazan and was made into a film in 1960.

Dee Byrd-Molnar, Director of the William Inge Center shared “We are excited to be able to continue this long-running tradition of honoring playwrights here in Independence.”

The William Inge Theatre Festival brings opportunities for students and community members to engage with theatre professionals. "I am thrilled to be able to work on this beautiful and surprising play. Inge was fearless about exploring the complexities of marriage, family, and loss,” said Molnar. “I will be bringing in a couple of guest actors who will be working alongside our theatre students and members from the community to bring this story to life."

Joel Williams, the Director of Technical Theatre at ICC, will be leading set design and creating opportunities for collaboration for ICC technical theatre students to learn more about professional set design, lighting, and costuming.

The 40th William Inge Theatre Festival is scheduled to be held April 20th -22nd, 2023. Watch for more details about workshops, the New Play Lab, the Scholars' Conference, and other professional guest artists.
