Ellis Serves as Director of Veteran Student Success

Independence Community College welcomes Tommy Ellis as the Director of Veteran Student Success. Ellis joins the Independence community from Sherman, Texas, where he brings with him a wealth of knowledge in Instructional and student-centered services and an extensive military background.

“We are excited to have Tommy Ellis at ICC,” said David Adams, Vice President for Student Affairs. “He brings the knowledge and experience with him to support the goals of the Veteran Student Success Center and our area veterans.”

Ellis served in the U.S. Army at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, as well as in military logistics support for both the U.S. Army and U. S. Air Force at bases in Iraq, Afghanistan and Qatar.  He holds his Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Management and a Master of Science in Labor Economics and Industrial Relations from North Texas State University.

“Being an Army veteran myself and having worked closely with the military at various posts during peak conflicts in the middle-East has given me a rare opportunity to see the challenges we face in helping veterans transition from the stress of military life to campus life ,” explained Ellis. “Working with the veteran population at ICC will allow me the honor and privilege to serve this great Nation by serving those who continue to protect it.”

The Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at ICC strives to support student veterans in achieving their academic, career, and personal goals. The College was also appointed as a Purple Heart College by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. This classification is in recognition of the support for military members, including veterans and their families.
