Green Zone Advocacy Training Prepares Campus Community for Veterans Success

Independence Community College held Green Zone Advocacy Training for ICC faculty, staff, and students on April 1, 2022.

The ICC Green Zone Program is a training program designed to develop a campus community of support for veteran students. ICC faculty, staff, and students were provided tools to enhance the overall college experience for military-affiliated students so they may guide and assist them towards degree completion and a successful future.

"Transitioning from military life to student life can be tricky for student veterans and other military-connected students," explains Alan Parsons, Director of Veteran Student Success. "Military and college structures are culturally dissimilar, making the transition difficult."

Following training, attendees will be presented with a certificate of completion and will be regarded as "Green Zone Advocates." They will also receive decals to display outside of their offices to let others know they can provide support and information about resources for all of ICC's military-connected students.

"The Green Zone program is devised to familiarize staff, faculty, and college students to become more aware and supportive of our military-connected students," said Parsons. "The goal is to continue to make ICC a more military-familiar college."
