Independence Community College is pleased to host an Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on March 8 for the newly established Esports Arena, located in the Student Union. Events will take place from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and are free to the public. The Esports program is new to ICC this academic year.
“The addition of our Esports Arena provides a chance for the students and community to have access to high tier gaming equipment and production,” said Chris Kumke, Director of Esports. “Also, students have the chance to compete against other colleges while creating their own team identity.”
The arena houses 21 gaming stations for students, three public flatscreens for gaming, and a driving/flight simulator. Students can compete, live stream/broadcast tournaments, and handle motion graphics within the Esports program. The Open House will include refreshments, tours, and a chance to try out the various gaming equipment during tournament and free play.
“Students who compete in the collegiate field have a chance to compete at a higher level or even look into the coaching aspect,” explains Kumke. “While playing in the collegiate scene, you open your opportunity to network and learn more about the potential future you can have in Esports. Overall, Esports is one of the most inclusive non-traditional sports out there.”
Esports has seen more than a 10% growth in the past two years and is expected to have a competitive gaming audience of close to 577.2 million by 2024.
“It has been proven that if started at a younger age, Esports participants can create greater communication skills and fine motor functions. Esports is not only about competing but gives a chance for students to work in the industry itself,” concludes Kumke. “Whether it’s in the business side, production, competition, or management side Esports creates opportunities that fuel their passions. Esports is a booming industry, and it has the money to back it, therefore creating jobs and opportunity at mass.”
