Nelida Mendoza and Family Selected for 2021 First-Generation Family of the Year

Independence Community College is pleased to announce Nelida (Nellie) Lyday Mendoza as the ICC First-Generation Family of the Year. The family will be recognized during the football halftime show, October 16, 2021. Mendoza was nominated by Sonja Conley, ICC Navigator.

“Nellie is an adult with adult children but is a perfect example of putting herself through college with no family example to go by,” said Conley.

Growing up on the Wind River Reservation, in Wyoming, Mendoza eventually made her way to Kansas after graduation. While attending ICC she then met her current husband Jason Mendoza, who is also an ICC graduate and First-Generation student. Together they have raised three children all of whom have completed or are currently working on getting their bachelor’s degree.

“I’m so excited to honor Nellie and the Mendoza family as ICC’s 2021 First-Generation Family of the Year,” said David Adams, Vice President for Student Affairs. “ICC has many First-Gen students, and the Mendoza family is a shining example of how higher education, specifically ICC offers opportunities for advancement in life.”
