Langston Hughes subject of Inge Festival show

Poet Langston Hughes confronts agonized dilemmas the night prior to appearing before the McCarthy Hearings in the intriguing drama “Are You Now or Have you Ever Been.” Written by Inge Festival playwright Honoree Carlyle Brown, “Are You Now…” opens the William Inge Theater Festival May 9. The show features a cast of professional Kansas City-based actors in a concert reading. Damron Russell stars as Langston Hughes.

Curtain time is 7:30 pm. At ICC and tickets are $10.

Honoree Carlyle Brown is one of America’s most noted writers for the stage of the African-American experience. He will be in Independence all four days of the festival to receive the William Inge Outstanding Achievement in the American Theater Award.

The  William Inge Theater Festival is the Official Theater Festival of the State of Kansas, as proclaimed by the Kansas State legislature in 2010.  It runs May 9-12 and features evening performances and, during the daytime, panels, workshops, and readings of new plays.
