Independence, Kansas – June 7, 2017 – The Upward Bound (UB) Program at Independence Community College (ICC) has received notice from the U.S. Department of Education that funding for the program will continue for an additional five years.

The grant will fund Upward Bound through 2022 with an annual award of $290,751.00, or $1,453,755.00 over the five-year span.

“We are so excited to receive this grant and continue our services,” said Ms. Valon Jones, the UB director. “Upward Bound helps young men and women who never realized a college education was something obtainable.”

UB exposes students with various disadvantaged backgrounds to college life through an immersive summer schedule where students live on campus, attend classes, and engage in team-building exercises and activities.

The academic component of Upward Bound focuses on preliminary college skills, such as ACT preparation, time management, study skills, college preparedness, and financial literacy.

ICC’s program serves 65 students from Montgomery, Wilson, Labette and Chautauqua counties.
