Cosmetology

Cosmetology ClassCosmetology is made up of courses in Cosmetology, Nail Tech, and Instructor Training, and is dedicated to providing a solid foundation in the arts and disciplines of these subjects. This department offers students the options of either a three semester (50 credit) or two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree (65 credit).

The certificate permits the student to take a state Cosmetology Examination to obtain a license. After the student has completed 375 hours of schooling, appointments with clients may be scheduled to simulate a professional day in the typical salon.

The student interested in this program must meet the requirements of the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology and must pass the state examination before they can be issued a license to practice in the state of Kansas. All students enrolled in the Cosmetology program must meet the ICC admission guidelines.

Facial Treatment TrainingPurpose of the Program

The Cosmetology program provides training on a vocational level for men and women interested in preparing themselves for employment in the field of Cosmetology.

Admission Requirements 

  • Write a short essay of 200 to 300 words; think about why you have chosen a career path in cosmetology.  What do you expect to receive from and contribute to your education?  Organize your thoughts and write an essay that explains them.  Things to think about and include are transitional skills (computer skills, phone skills, and customer service skills).  Cosmetology Essay >>
  •  Interviews will be conducted end of May for Fall start and the first part of December for Spring.  Students will be contacted to schedule an appointment closer to the interview periods.
  • Students will need to submit two letters of reference to Cosmetology Director/Tonda Lawrence, 2615 W. Main, Independence, KS  67301 or via email tlawrence@indycc.edu .
    • Letters should include information regarding the applicants character, work ethic, attendance etc…
    • Letters can come from employers, teachers, president of a club or organization they are a member of, etc…letters should not come from family members.

AAS = Cosmetology hours + 15 additional hours required of which 15 must be ICC General Education requirements.

Full-time Cosmetology classes start every January & August and must be completed in 3 semesters. Nail Tech must be completed in 16 weeks. Attendance is mandatory.
