The Independence Community College Board of Trustees is pleased to announce James P. Arnold as the institution’s next president. Arnold brings more than two decades of higher education leadership experience with a strong background in enrollment management, student development, athletics administration, and community engagement.
Arnold currently serves as Vice President of Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Athletics at Columbia College, where he oversees enrollment initiatives, marketing operations, athletics, student success efforts, financial aid, recruiting, military and community relations, and campus operations across the country.
Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for innovative leadership, strategic enrollment growth, collaborative campus culture, and strong community partnerships. He has helped lead initiatives that strengthened retention efforts, expanded graduate offerings, enhanced military-affiliated student benefits, improved the student experience, and increased tuition revenue across multiple campuses nationwide.
Board of Trustees President John Eubanks said the Board was impressed not only by Arnold’s professional experience, but also by his vision for student success and community connection.
“James Arnold is highly motivated and has a strong belief that institutions are at their best when every student is known, every faculty and staff member is empowered, and every member of the campus community has the support and opportunity to thrive,” said Eubanks. “We look forward to the energy and presence he will bring both on campus and throughout our broader community.”
Eubanks also expressed appreciation to those who participated throughout the presidential search process.
“The Board also wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to our community members, administrators,
faculty, and staff for their time, dedication, and thoughtful participation in this
process,” said Eubanks. “Your investment in the future of this institution is deeply
appreciated.”
Arnold’s background includes leadership in enrollment management, athletics administration,
residential life, student affairs, and institutional operations. He has overseen multimillion-dollar
budgets, supervised large teams across multiple departments, and played a key role
in launching new academic offerings and strategic growth initiatives.
Throughout his career, Arnold has emphasized relationship-building, collaboration, and creating environments where students feel connected both on campus and within the surrounding community.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to join Independence Community College as its next president," said Arnold. "I truly appreciate the faith and confidence Chair Eubanks and the members of the Board of Trustees and the search committee have placed in me. ICC has a strong tradition of serving students and communities across Southeast Kansas, and I am inspired by the passion and pride I've already seen throughout the campus and community. I believe community colleges play a transformational role in changing lives, strengthening local economies, and building meaningful partnerships. I look forward to working alongside faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to continue moving ICC forward while honoring the college's proud history and traditions."
Arnold’s career in higher education spans leadership roles at community colleges, NAIA institutions, and NCAA institutions across Missouri and Kansas. His experience includes positions at Highland Community College, Central Methodist University, Southeast Missouri State University, Westminster College, and Columbia College.
Arnold is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Adult Education and Leadership at William Woods University and holds an Executive Master of Business Administration from Benedictine College.
The college will announce additional details regarding Arnold’s official start date and transition activities in the coming weeks.
