The Independence Community College Fab Lab is giving community members an opportunity to explore the art of stained glass this fall with beginner and intermediate classes offered from September through December.
The hands-on classes will introduce participants to the techniques used to create stained glass pieces, including cutting, grinding, foiling and soldering. Students will learn both Tiffany-style copper foil techniques and leaded stained glass methods while creating their own projects.
The Beginner Stained Glass Class will meet Thursdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Oct. 1 and continuing through Dec. 10. The class is designed for those with little or no previous stained glass experience and will focus on foundational skills and techniques.
Registration for the beginner class is $160. The registration fee for new students includes materials for their first project.
For those who already have stained glass experience, an Intermediate Stained Glass Class will be offered Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Sept. 29 and continuing through Dec. 8. The intermediate class is $140 and allows returning students to continue developing their skills while working on more advanced projects.
Materials are not included in the registration fee for returning students. Glass may be purchased from online or local retailers, and participants may also work with instructors to determine the materials needed for their projects.
Both classes will be held at the ICC Fab Lab, 3884 CR 3730, Independence.
The classes are part of the Fab Lab’s ongoing efforts to provide hands-on learning opportunities for both ICC students and members of the surrounding community. In addition to learning the technical process behind stained glass, participants will have the opportunity to develop their creativity and leave the course with handcrafted pieces of their own.
