Independence Community College is proud to recognize Head Softball Coach Samantha Allen as a recipient of the 2026 Spirit of Unity Award, presented by the Independence Chamber of Commerce Diversity Taskforce in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service, inclusion, and community.

Established in 2008, the Independence Diversity Taskforce has served as a steady and inspiring presence in the community, promoting unity through respect, dignity, and compassion. Its mission reflects Dr. King’s belief in building a “Beloved Community” where every person is seen, valued, and respected,  regardless of race, background, ability, or belief.

The Spirit of Unity Award honors individuals who live out these values through meaningful action. This year, the award recognizes Coach Allen’s leadership and dedication to Buddy Ball, a program rooted in the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to belong.

Buddy Ball was brought to Independence by Gloria Price, whose vision created a welcoming space for children of all abilities to experience the joy of sports. The program emphasizes inclusion over competition, ensuring that every player has a buddy by their side, offering encouragement, assistance, and friendship.

For many years, those buddies have been members of the Independence Community College Softball team. Under Coach Allen’s leadership, ICC student-athletes don’t just volunteer their time, they actively model compassion, patience, and service.

“Coach Allen has created a culture where giving back is just as important as competing on the field,” said Melissa Anderson, ICC Athletic Director. “Her commitment to Buddy Ball reflects the heart of our athletics program, developing student-athletes who lead with integrity, empathy, and purpose.”

Through her guidance, Buddy Ball has become a place where joy replaces fear, confidence replaces doubt, and every participant knows they matter.

Recreation Director Brent Julian shared that Buddy Ball “celebrates all abilities and strengthens our community,” emphasizing the program’s lasting impact on participants and families.

Parents Dave and Jenny Rood also expressed their appreciation, saying,

“We have always been impressed by the way Gloria and Samantha interact with the Buddy Ball players. They consistently show care and compassion while creating a positive and welcoming experience. The players truly have fun, and it is evident in the relationships that have been formed.”

Those who attend Buddy Ball games witness moments filled with smiles, laughter, and pride, a reminder that no one is defined by what they cannot do, but by the joy of belonging.

Coach Samantha Allen and Gloria Price were formally recognized during the 2026 Spirit of Unity Award ceremony, where community leaders honored their lasting contributions to inclusion, compassion, and service. Allen was presented with her award during the Men’s Basketball game on January 21.

Through Coach Allen’s leadership, Dr. King’s vision continues to live on; one person, one game, and one act of unity at a time.
