Fab Lab ICC's Correll named to Kansas top 50 list

Jim Correll (right), director of the Fab Lab at Independence Community College discusses the entrepreneurial mindset.

Independence, Kansas, May 12, 2017 Jim Correll, the director of the Fab Lab at Independence Community College (ICC) has been named by Kansas’ top business magazine as one of the “50 Kansans You Should Know.” The award was made by Ingram’s, the most widely-circulated business magazine in Kansas, and the list appears in the May 2017 issue.

Each year, the magazine identifies 50 individuals from all walks of life whose paths have led them to stand out amongst the 3 million residents of the sunflower state.

Correll’s entrepreneurial mindset, coupled with his passion for educating and empowering others, helped secure his selection to the elite list.

“I just came to realize that the traditional approach I was trying to use to spawn new business and help existing businesses was not very effective,” said Correll.

This changed when Correll took over the Fab Lab at ICC. As the director, Correll has been instrumental in promoting the entrepreneurial mindset and helping entrepreneurs fulfill their dreams. Through the Fab Lab, Correll has supported business startups, provided multiple Ice House Training sessions backed by the Kauffman Foundation, and introduced countless Southeast Kansas youths to a whole new way of thinking.

“The number one thing holding rural Kansas back is mindset,” said Correll. Without the change to the entrepreneurial mindset, most of the other stuff won’t work.”

Correll and his wife Susan (retired) are active in the community and reside in Coffeyville, Kansas.  Correll joined ICC in 2006 and helped launch the Fab Lab in 2014.

Joining Correll on the 2017 list of 50 Kansas You Should Know was former ICC instructor and tennis coach, Ken Brown.
