Summerfest

The Upward Bound Summer Program, also known as Summerfest, is a five-week college simulated residential program.  During this time, participants live in the campus residence hall and take classes to improve their academic skills. Participants also take part in community service, college preparation, cultural and educational excursions.  In addition, social and recreational events are offered in the evenings.  The sixth week of Summerfest is an optional trip participants may attend, based on grades and behavior throughout the summer.

Sophomore Scholarship

Rising 11th graders have the opportunity to participate in the Sophomore Scholarship program.  Upward Bound will utilize fundraising money to pay for three hours of tuition and books for the Public Speaking course at Independence Community College for each qualifying participant.  To qualify for this scholarship a participants must be a rising 11th grader, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, and have a counselor recommendation.  The course must be transferable to most Kansas public post-secondary institutions. 

Junior Scholarship

Rising 12th graders have the opportunity to participate in the Junior Scholarship program.  Upward Bound will use fundraising money to pay for three hours of tuition and books at Independence Community College for each qualifying participant.  To qualify for this scholarship a participants must be a rising 12th grader, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, and have a counselor recommendation.  The course must be transferable to most Kansas public post-secondary institutions.  

Bridge Program

Participants who have graduated in the spring, participate in the Summer Bridge program.  Upward Bound pays for up to six hours of tuition and books at Independence Community College for each qualifying participant. The course must be transferable to most Kansas public post-secondary institutions.  Additonal requirements to participate in the Bridge program apply.  Please ask a UB staff member for details.

Summer Educational and Cultural Trip

The Upward Bound staff plan a three to four day trip to a regional, major city for the week following the conclusion of the summer program.  Participants who have attended regularly, have had no behavior issues, and received a 2.5 GPA in summer classes are permitted to attend.  The 2018 trip is planned for July 5-7 to the Northwest Arkansas area.
