Cosmetology

Cosmetology is an exciting career that can open many doors beginning with working in a salon but also including stage, pageant, film, and print work. At Independence Community College the Cosmetology Program provides vocational training for men and women interested in preparing themselves for employment by providing a solid foundation in the art and discipline of hair care and design.

The program is offered both as a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree and as a Certificate Program. Many students go directly from training to the workforce while others choose to work towards their degree or take additional business classes preparing them for management positions or future business owners.

Students rarely expect to learn about chemistry, electricity or anatomy and physiology but soon learn that these subjects are imperative to understanding hair color and perming. After the student has completed 375 hours of instruction, appointments with clients may be scheduled to simulate a professional day in the typical salon. All training is conducted in ICC’s new Paradise West Salon.

ICC’s Cosmetology classes are small to provide each student the individualized attention required for the training. This program takes an estimated 10 months to complete which includes the 1500 clock hours of training Kansas requires for eligibility to sit for the state licensure exam.
