ICC Upward Bound returns home from Puerto Rico visit

Independence, Kansas—March 31, 2017— Independence Community College’s (ICC) Upward Bound program took qualifying seniors on a trip to Puerto Rico March 17-March 21. 12 Upward Bound students from area high schools made the trip alongside Gayle Chapman, Upward Bound Administrative Assistant and Valon Jones, Director of Upward Bound.

The group visited many points of interest including the Ventana Al Mar, Capitol Building, Walkway of Presidents, San Cristobal Fort, Isla Verde, La Coca Waterfall and the University of Puerto Rico San Juan. They also joined in on tours of the old and new San Juan, El Yunque Rainforest and Yokahu.

Upward Bound has traveled to Chicago and Memphis in the past, so a trip outside the continental United States was even more impressive.

“This trip was once in a lifetime,” said Valon Jones. “Because of its success, we are going to continue taking seniors on their own trip to a further destination as a reward for the commitment they’ve shown towards Upward Bound.”

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the Upward Bound program will go to Oklahoma City in July for summer trip.
