ICC's Dennis selected to take part in K-State summer research experience program

ICC sophomore, Brittany Dennis

Independence, Kansas—March 28, 2018— Independence Community College (ICC) sophomore, Brittany Dennis, was recently selected as one of 10 undergraduate students to participate in Kansas State University’s Research Experience for Undergrad Students (REU) summer program.

The 10-week summer REU program will take place at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. Dennis looks forward to gaining valuable experience through participating in research efforts.

“I’m stoked to learn about different machines and processes,” Dennis said. “I would like to see more about how a lab works and also build connections.”

Dennis is from Wichita, Kan. and attended Maize South High School. Her interest for chemical forensic science initially emerged in middle school when she became a member of Science Olympiad.

“That’s what started making me know I wanted to be in a research field,” Dennis said. “I’ve always enjoyed chemistry and science as a whole.”

Her passion continued to develop through high school, frequently participating in forensic science labs, and in college at ICC where she says her classes and professors have prepared her for this journey.

“I feel like my experience at ICC has really helped me and I have a lot of respect for the science department,” Dennis said.

Dennis is one of two students from ICC to be accepted into the REU summer program in the last 13 years.

Following her summer of research experience at Kansas State, Dennis plans to attend Washburn University in the fall of 2018 to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Forensic Science.

The REU program provides each of its undergrad student participants with a scholarship in which they can use for their future educational endeavors.
