Student Support Services Program Reading/English Specialist
Independence Community College (ICC) seeks applications for the position of
Reading/English Specialist in
its federally funded Student Support Service (SSS) program.
ICC is located in Southeast Kansas.
The SSS program serves 213 qualified applicants in the total
enrollment of approximately 3,000 students each year and has initiated
continuous quality improvement through the AQIP accreditation process.
The college is seeking a team-oriented professional for
the position of Reading/English Specialist to tutor and coordinate support
services in the areas of reading and English.
The position will include peer
tutoring, test reviews, overseeing study groups and implementing problem
solving sessions with students.
The specialist will monitor student progress and provide progress reports to
the SSS Director.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in reading or English required, with a
minimum of two years teaching experience or tutoring experience in English
preferred; familiarity with “at-risk” disadvantaged students, developmental
studies, computer-assisted instruction, learning style modalities, and
utilization of interactive tutoring.
Full-time, twelve-month position. Salary range is commensurate with
education and experience, with benefits package.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Student Support Services (SSS) Reading/English Specialist reports to SSS
Director and is responsible for providing direct academic support services to
SSS participants.

Develop curricula and organize support reading/English workshops.
4.
Develop individualized learning plans for SSS participants based on assessment
results and regular input from faculty.
Focus instruction on academic skills development as well as mastery.
5.
Provide individualized instruction in one-on-one and group settings.
6.
Monitor student progress through regular communication with faculty and through
SSS tutor reports. Provide weekly information on student progress to the SSS
retention counselor for individualized follow-up.
7.
Work with faculty to strengthen students’ support networks and develop new
services as needed to meet changing student needs.
8.
Other duties as assigned.
1.
Identify, recommend for hire, train, supervise and evaluate peer and
professional tutors, who provide services to program participants.
2.
Instruct specialized reading/English courses for program participants as
assigned by SSS Director and Dean of Instruction.
3.
Develop reading/English curricula for program participants.
4.
Assist in academic advising as assigned.
5.
Assist SSS Director in scheduling tutorial sessions and study halls; monitor and
support study halls and other SSS activities.
6.
Develop individualized learning plans for program participants based on
assessment results; assist in coordinating assessment for program participants
with college-wide placement and assessment programs.
7.
Tutor participants in both developmental and transfer track reading and English
courses and keep students' progress and plans current.
8.
Assist SSS Director in matching appropriate content-area tutors with program
participants and monitor participants’ progress through periodic assessments.
9.
Work closely
with the SSS Director, division chairs, and college faculty to facilitate SSS
participants’ progress through proper advisement.
10.
Provide a positive learning environment committed to ICC student success by
being receptive to various learning styles found in the comprehensive community
college setting and assure equal access to program services for all qualified
students.
11.
Maintain and enhance teaching excellence through periodic professional
development activities involving in-service training, workshops, seminars,
and/or reading/writing publications.
12.
Provide input in the college’s organizational shared governance structure
through involvement in committees, councils and supportive activities related to
the development and enhancement of the college mission and strategies.
13.
Maintain collaborative, collegial, and responsible work habits.
14.
Ensure a high degree of ethical standards, including adherence to general rules
of safety, College procedures, and fair labor standards.
15.
A commitment to high professional standards, including professional growth.
16.

1.
Bachelor’s degree in English or education.
2.
Fluent in English, both written and spoken
3.
Minimum of two years of experience teaching or tutoring in reading/English
preferred.
4.
Content area expertise in the assigned field of teaching and an interest in
imparting knowledge to others.
5.
Electronic media literacy and ability to use a variety of instructional media as
necessary.
6.
Ability to drive and have a valid driver’s license.
7.
Familiarity with “at-risk” disadvantaged students, developmental studies,
computer-assisted instruction, learning style modalities, and utilization of
interactive tutoring preferred.
8.
Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those encountered by first
generation, low-income students and students with disabilities preferred.
9.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and community.
10.
Sensitivity to diverse learning styles and developmental needs.
11.
High degree of organizational skills with an ability to manage multiple
deadlines, tasks, projects, and assignments.
12.
Ability to lift and carry 30 lbs. without limitations required
13.
An educational philosophy in alignment with a small, rural comprehensive
community college.
