Resident Assistant – Upward Bound Summer Program

 

Independence Community College is seeking applications for the Resident Assistant – Upward Bound Summer Program.  Independence Community College is located in southeast Kansas and serves approximately 3,000 full- and part-time students each year through its programs, courses, and services and has initiated continuous quality improvement through the AQIP accreditation process.

 

Program Summary

The Upward Bound Summer Program is a six-week college simulated residential program.  During this phase, students live on campus in residence halls and take classes to improve their skills in English, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Foreign Language.  The afternoons are reserved for electives such as art, music, drama, karate, band etc.  Students also experience community service and job shadowing.  Other duties as assigned

 

Job Description

 

Under the direct supervision of the Academic Coordinator, Resident Assistants are responsible for the direct supervision of high school students living in the residence hall, advising, evening activities and tutorial assistance.  College students applying of this position must be able to live in the residence hall with students and must have the capability to provide tutorial assistance in any or a combination of the following areas:  Mathematics (Algebra I and II, Basic Mathematics, Algebra/Trigonometry, Advance Mathematics, Geometry and Calculus), Natural Science (Chemistry, Advanced Placement Biology, General Biology, and Physics, each with accompanying lectures and labs), English/Literature (high school level and college level with emphasis on writing skills, grammar, literature, college composition, creative writing, expository writing, speech/debate and college research), Computer Science (computer software, basic computer programming) and Foreign Languages (French and Spanish).

 

Preferred Applicants

 

1.      Strong academic background in postsecondary education (at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale)

2.      Current undergraduates in sophomore, junior, or senior year; professional and graduate school students

3.      Chemistry, Biology, and Physics majors are encouraged to apply.

4.      Tutoring experience will be considered in the areas of Math, Science, and English

5.      College students having current or previous Resident Advisor and/ or Upward Bound (or similar education program) experiences are strongly encouraged to apply.

6.      Applicants must have a valid driver’s license

 

Other Requirements

 

1.      Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and community with sensitivity to diverse learning styles and developmental needs

2.      Strong time management skills including timelines of reports and communications

3.      Clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications

4.      Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of educationally and economically disadvantaged students

5.      Experience with implementation of group tutoring sessions or performed tutoring activities

6.      Ability to be a self starter and self motivated

7.      Ability to be a leader and role model for UB participants
