Full-Time Custodian

Independence Community College is seeking applications for the position of Custodian.  Independence Community College, a small, rural, residential community college in southeast Kansas, serves approximately 3,000 full- and part-time students each year and has initiated continuous quality improvement through the AQIP accreditation process.

Position Summary

The college is seeking a team-oriented professional who, as a part of the Physical Plant Team, will perform a wide variety of building custodial, and maintenance activities for the college physical plant.  The position will include providing specific building maintenance as assigned, assisting with basic building interior and exterior improvement activities, assisting with building/campus activity set up, identifying specific building custodial/maintenance needs, processing work orders, establishing usage schedule, completing work list priorities, and initiating preventive maintenance.  This will involve sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and shoveling with the use of mops, brooms, vacuum sweepers, cleaning agents, towels, sponges, drying clothes and various brushes. Some power tools and motorized equipment may be used in the performance of this job. Carrying equipment, supplies, tools, furniture and other items is a regular part of this job. The Supervisor of Physical Plant may assign other duties for the successful operation of the campus.

Qualifications

Qualifications for this position will include experience related to the scope of work in the position summary.  The ideal candidate will possess excellent custodial skills and be able to follow directives with minimal supervision.  Candidate must be able to interact with the public in a professional manner.  A valid driver’s license is required. The candidate must have the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, the ability to safely use various tools generally used in the performance of this job, and the physical ability to use both hands, both feet, both arm an both legs in the function of this job, which additionally will require the ability to lift and/or carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.

Position Information

Full-time, non-exempt, KPERS eligible 12-month position.  Hourly wage range is $7.50-$9.00 an hour and is commensurate with knowledge and experience.

Job Description

The Custodial staff performs building and service activities with the college’s Physical Plant Team.  Specific responsibilities and maintenance duties assigned will be dependent on demonstrated knowledge and expertise.  Custodians report to the Supervisor of Physical Plant and Chief Info. & Facility Officer.

Primary Responsibilities

 

  1. Provide specific building maintenance as assigned.
  2. Assist with basic building interior and exterior improvement activities.
  3. Assist building/campus activity set up.
  4. Provide services for the campus buildings as assigned.
  5. Other responsibilities necessary to the successful operation of the campus.

 

General Qualifications

 

  1. Basic knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry and mechanical.
  2. Takes periodic inventory counts of spare parts and equipment.
  3. Consistently strive to maintain a safe and operational facility.
  4. Clarity of thought and expression.
  5. Time management and organizational skills.
  6. Energetic work ethic.
  7. Team Player, dedicated and hard worker.
  8. Demonstrated hands-on familiarity with custodial functions and equipment.
