Position Announcement

Independence Community College is seeking applications for the position of  Director of Student Life.  Independence Community College, a small, rural, residential community college in southeast Kansas, serves approximately 3000 full- and part-time students each year and has initiated continuous quality improvement through the AQIP accreditation process.

Position Summary

The college is seeking a Director of Student Life to oversee the college’s residence life program, student orientation, student organizations, student government, activities, and intramurals and shuttle services.  This is a live-in position that supervises a full-time Residence Hall Coordinator.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required.  Master’s Degree in college student personnel administration or related field strongly preferred.  A minimum of 1.5 years experience in housing and/or student activities administration preferred.  Experience as a live-in graduate assistant, hall coordinator, or director strongly preferred  Strong communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with students.

Position Information

Full-time, 12-month position.  Salary is $27,000 with benefits package including a two-bedroom apartment in the college’s brick units, a 19-meal plan per week board package, participation in the institution’s retirement program, health insurance, and vacation and sick leave.

Job Description

Director of Student Life

The Director of Student Life is responsible for overseeing the college’s residence life program, student activities, new student orientation, student organizations, student government, intramurals and shuttle services.  The Director of Student Life reports to the Dean of Student Services.

Primary Responsibilities

1.      Direct comprehensive residence life program housing for up to 260 traditional-aged students in college’s new residence hall and its smaller Brick units, daily.

2.      Duties require budgetary responsibility, and fiscal implementation.

3.      Oversee a comprehensive student activities program, weekly.

4.      Plan and execute new student orientation every semester and to new groups, including non-traditional students.

5.      Duties require supervision, training, evaluation and/or disciplining of one or more employees; utilizing appropriate documentation.

6.      Share on-call responsibility with the Residence Hall Coordinator.

7.      Duties require the regular maintenance of student records and accurate data input.

8.      Help oversee the college’s student judicial system in cooperation with the Dean of Student Services, and maintaining a “grievance log,” on a daily basis.

9.      Develop the Residence Life Activity Calendar for each semester; and in advance for the year.

10.  Develop, evaluate, and edit Educational Programming that is planned, minimally one per month.

11.  Develop, evaluate, and edit the Residence Guidebook and the Student Handbook, annually.

12.  Prepare for mail out, the Housing Packet containing contract, view book, calendars, cost sheets, academic calendar, orientation calendar, forms and room reservation information and documents, as requested.

13.  Serve as advisor for  the college’s Student Government Association and Campus Activities Board, weekly

14.  Track, report, and coordinate van transportation for YFU students and other students to and from home to school and to the airport, as needed.

15.  Serve as a member of the Dean of Student Services senior staff; represent the division on campus-wide committees.

16.  Perform additional duties as assigned; daily.

1.      Strong communication and interpersonal skills; Communicate effectively with students, staff, and community with sensitivity to diverse populations, learning styles and developmental needs.

2.      Clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications.

3.      Ability to utilize time management skills in work, timeliness of reports and communications, including disciplinary letters and decisions.

4.      High degree of organizational skills.  Able to manage multiple deadlines, tasks, projects, and assignments.

5.      Ability to handle stressful situations and overlapping priority demands.

6.      Electronic media literacy; work requires computer skills to assure accuracy of data input and completion of forms.

7.      Collaborative, collegial, and responsible work habits; high degree of ethical standards, including adherence to general rules of safety, college procedures and fair labor standards; must espouse a value of fairness and consistency.

8.      A commitment to high professional standards, including professional growth.

9.      Duties require minimal physical demands, with the ability to lift up to 30 lbs.

 

10.  Duties are performed in a standard work week timeframe, but may require scheduling non-traditional work hours.

 

11.  Responsiveness to leadership.

 

12.  Serve as an effective ambassador for the college at all times.

 

Specific Qualifications

1.      Must have experience and education related to the scope of work and essential functions of the job.

2.      Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in college student personnel administration or related field preferred.

3.      Experience as a live-in graduate assistant, hall coordinator, or director strongly preferred.

4.      Must espouse a collaborative work ethic and a philosophy of higher education that is compatible with the mission of a comprehensive community college.
