Tales From The Track

The Independence Community College Track team participated in the Baymont Inn/Fazoli's Open at Missouri Southern University in Joplin Missouri. 

The Lady Pirates had one athlete qualify for the NJCAA Indoor Championships. With a 6th place finish Christina Granville, long jumped a 5.34m (17-06.25) to qualify for nationals. LaShawn Vaughns continued her winning ways with a win in the 200m dash with a time of 26.01.  A big push for the Lady Pirate team was Lakeitha Green who made a great improvement from her 1st track meet. Green dropped nearly three seconds off her 400m time and she placed 5th in the 200m with a time of 26.31.

Thelma Reeves placed 6th in the 800m dash with a time of 2:28:43, which is 14 hundredth of a second off the National Qualifying mark. The Pirate men track team had one athlete qualify for nationals. In the High Jump, Dempsey Josinvil tied for second place with a jump of 1.99m (6-06.25) which qualifies him for nationals. Alonzo Wilson had a great showing in the triple jump, Wilson who hasn’t triple jumped since high school jumped 13.69m (44-11.00) for his 1st time jumping during the indoor season. 

So far the track team has a total of three athletes qualified for Nationals.  LaShawn Vaugns (60m dash and 200m dash), Christina Granville (Long Jump) and Dempsey Josinvil (High Jump) have all qualified for Nationals so far. Aaron Tachine and Kirkland Beale are looking for qualify for Nationals in the Multi-Events at Johnson Community College on February 18, 2005. 

The Pirate/Lady Pirate track team will also travel to Manhattan, Kansas for the Region VI Championships held at Kansas State University on February 19th and 20th. The Regional Meet will most likely be the last meet to qualify for the NJCAA National Indoor Track Meet.
