BASKETBALL NEWS & EVENTS:

 

March 14th, 2009

Two ICC Players were honored with all-conference awards at the conclusion of the season as voted on by conference coaches. 

Michael Craion, a 6'5 sophomore from Kansas City, MO, was named First Team All-Region VI, First Team All-Jayhawk East and was named to the Region VI all-tournament team.  Michael averaged 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game on the season.  Michael also led the team in steals and blocks.  Michael was second on the team in assists and 3 point shots made. 

As a freshman, Michael was named Honorable Mention All-Jayhawk East.

 

 

Donald Rowe, a 6'3 sophomore from Kansas City, KS, was named Second Team All-Jayhawk East.  Donald averaged 15.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  Donald also led the team is assists and three point field goals made.  Donald was second on the team in steals.

 

 

 

March 4th, 2009

The #3 seeded Independence Pirates knock off #6 seed Pratt 82-78 in the first round of the Region VI tournament.  Pratt would prove to be a difficult play for the Pirates.  ICC led by as many as 10 points in the 2nd half, but Pratt would never go away.  Each time ICC would stretch a lead out, Pratt would answer with a three pointer.  Pratt closed the distance to 3 points with 3 1/2 minutes to play and had a chance to tie the game.  ICC pushed its lead up to 7 with under a minute to go.  Tyrone Gordon hit 3 consecutive 3 pointers in that stretch, but ICC knocked down all of their free throws to seal the deal. 

Karron McKenzie led ICC with 22 points.  Donald Rowe followed with 15 points and 7 rebounds.  Michael Craion added 12 points in the contest.

ICC improves to 19-12 on the year and will advance to the 2nd round of the Region VI tournament to play #2 seed Butler Community College.  The game will be held at Wichita State University, Saturday, March 7th at 1:00 pm.

 

February 28th, 2009

The Independence Pirates clinched the #3 seed in the Region VI basketball tournament with an 82-58 victory over the Neosho County Panthers.  ICC also finishes 3rd in conference play with a 13-5 record.  ICC has won 8 of their last 9 basketball games. 

Donald Rowe led the way with 27 points.  Michael Craion followed with 19 points and 13 rebounds, and freshman Dashawn Eagle chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds.  ICC improves to 18-12 overall on the year and will face Pratt Community College in the first round of the Region VI tournament for the 2nd consecutive season.

February 7th, 2009

The Independence Pirates knock off #14 Cowley County 65-58 in a solid team victory.  The Pirates jumped out to a 23-13 lead in the first half and held on to a 29-25 advantage at the intermission.  Cowley made a run at the Pirates and took a 4 point lead in the 2nd half.  ICC answered the bell with a 10-0 run en route to a victory over the nationally ranked Tigers. 

Michael Craion led the Pirate charge with 23 points and 11 rebounds.  Donald Rowe followed with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists in an all-around effort.  Freshman Dashawn Eagle chipped in 6 points and 8 rebounds.  Independence improves to 13-11 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

January 19th, 2009

The Pirates improved to 10-8 and 5-1 in conference play with a 59-46 victory over the visiting KCK Blue Devils.  The Pirates played solid defense to secure the victory over a scrappy and disciplined Blue Devil team.  Michael Craion led the way with a 24 point effort, including 17 in the first half, and Dashawn Eagle finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds.  Donald Rowe led the team with 6 assists.

 

November 15th, 2008

The Pirates drop two overtime contests at the Wendy's Thanksgiving Classic held in Liberal, KS.  Against Lamar (CO), PJ Reyes hits a 35 foot three point shot as regulation expires against the Pirates to force the overtime period.  ICC lost in OT 63-67.  Michael Craion led the Pirates with 20 points, followed by Daniel Rowe with 15 and Weston Wiebe with 13.

Against the Seward County Saints, ICC found itself down 9 points at halftime.  The Pirates rallied and and took control of the second half and would find themselves up by as many as 9 points.  With the contest tied at 82-82, freshman Dashawn Eagle connected on 1 of 2 free throws to give the Pirates the lead.  Sophomore Daniel Rowe took a charge on the defensive end with 6.5 seconds left and hit 1 of 2 free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining.  Seward threw the ball the length of the floor and were fouled on a three-point attempt.  Antonio Smith connected on 2 of 3 free throws to force overtime.  Seward claimed the victory in the fast-paced, action filled contest against the Pirates 93-87. 

Donald Rowe led the way with 26 points and 8 rebounds.  Michael Craion added 15 points, Daniel Rowe 14 points, and Karron McKenzie added 10 points and 6 steals.

November 12th, 2008

The Independence Pirates took control of the game early against the Cloud County Thunderbirds behind some aggressive defensive play and led 42-23 at halftime.  ICC pushed their lead to 27 points at one point in the second half and finished the contest with a 72-54 victory.  With the win, ICC improves to 3-0. 

Donald Rowe led the way with 27 points, 7 assists, and 5 steals.  Michael Craion added 16 points and 4 rebounds.  Freshman Weston Wiebe added 8 points and Karron McKenzie collected 7 rebounds on the evening.

November 8th, 2008

In a very physical and intense defensive contest, the ICC Pirates overcame a 24-17 halftime deficit to rally to a 58-51 victory against the Seminole State Trojans.  ICC improves to 2-0 on the season. 

Donald and Daniel Rowe led the way with 19 points each.  Michael Craion added 9 points and 11 rebounds.  Donald Rowe also added 12 rebounds and 4 assists.

November 5th, 2008

The Independence Pirates picked up there first win of the season with an 81-61 victory over Dodge City.  Daniel Rowe led the way with 33 points and connected on 7 three point shots.  Michael finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.  Donald Rowe added 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.  Freshman Weston Wiebe added 10 points in his college debut.

October 14th, 2008

Hanson Named NJCAA All-American

Sophomore Guard Antonio Hanson was named as a NJCAA 2nd-Team All-American!  Hanson was also the Jayhawk East Conference Player of the Year and a First Team All-Conference selection.  Hanson broke the school record for single season three-point baskets with 111 on the year.  Hanson led ICC in scoring with 20.2 points per game, assists with 3.8 assists per game, and in steals with 71.  Hanson was 5th in the region in scoring, 1st in the Region in three point baskets made, 1st in FT% and 10th in the Region in steals.  Hanson was 3rd in scoring, 7th in assists and tied for 10th in steals in the Eastern side of the conference.  Hanson was also named Jayhawk East Player of the Week on three different occasions.  Hanson transferred from Tulsa University and is taking his game on to Georgia Southern University next season to play for coach Jeff Price.
