MICK WILSON, Athletic Director
Mick
Wilson is beginning his
fourth year as the Athletic Director and sixth overall at
Independence Community College. Wilson has brought many
changes to the ICC athletic department including
facility and weight room improvements and the addition
of new sports such as soccer, golf, cheer & dance. The establishment
of corporate memberships has generated a sizable
financial impact on an already successful Pirate Booster
Club. Wilson brings knowledge, experience and a solid
reputation in athletics to ICC. As the Director of
Athletics, Wilson supervises 11 varsity programs and has
the assignment of leading the Pirate athletic department
in a positive and progressive direction. Wilson made his
return to Independence in 2005 and previously served as
the Head Men’s Basketball Coach from 2001-2003.
Wilson
spent 2003-2005 as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach
at Henderson State University (NCAA II) in Arkadelphia,
Arkansas. The Reddies enjoyed two successful seasons,
capturing the Gulf South Conference West Division
Championship and reaching the NCAA Division II South
Regional semifinals in 2004.
Mick
Wilson was Independence Community College’s 19th
Head Men’s Basketball Coach from 2001-2003. In 2002, he
led ICC to a third place finish in the Jayhawk
Conference Eastern Division. The Pirates also qualified
for postseason play by hosting a first round playoff
game and advancing to the Region VI Tournament
quarterfinals in Salina.
Prior
to ICC, Wilson spent the 2000-2001 season as the Head
Men’s Basketball Coach at Sterling College (NAIA) in
Sterling, Kansas. Wilson took over a dismal program and
promptly led the Warriors to their best season in eight
years. The Warriors qualified for postseason play and
also had victories over several nationally ranked
opponents.
Before
becoming the Head Coach at Sterling College, Wilson
served as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Henderson State
University where he earned his Master’s Degree. During
the 1999-2000 season, HSU compiled a 25-10 record and
won the Gulf South Conference Championship. The Reddies
also earned a berth in the NCAA Division II national
tournament.
Prior
to joining the staff at Henderson State, Wilson coached
in the high school ranks for nine years compiling a
134-59 record. Most recently, Wilson was the Head Boy’s
Basketball Coach at East Central High School in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. During the 1997-1998 season, East Central
advanced to the quarterfinals of the class 5A Oklahoma
State Tournament. In 1998, he led East Central to a
third place finish in the prestigious Tulsa Schoolboy
Tournament of Champions. During the 1998-1999 season,
Wilson guided East Central to the Eastland Conference
Championship and was named Coach of the Year.
Before
his tenure at East Central, Wilson was the Head Boy’s
Basketball Coach at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg,
Kansas. The Purple Dragons, which had been a SEK
Conference doormat, quickly improved from a 6-14 record
in Wilson’s first year at the helm to a 21-4 record in
his final season. The Dragons won the Burlington
Invitational Tournament in 1996 and again in 1997.
During his final season (1996-1997) at Pittsburg High,
the Purple Dragons advanced to the class 5A Kansas State
Finals by defeating defending state champion McPherson
High School. The victory snapped McPherson’s streak of
eight straight 5A Kansas State Finals appearances.
Pittsburg finished as the 5A Kansas State Runner-up to
Blue Valley North.
Wilson
began his head coaching career at Welch High School (class
A) in Welch, Oklahoma. He led the Wildcats to several
tournament and district championships.
Wilson is a 1983 graduate of Quapaw High
School (OK). He earned his Associate of Arts degree from
Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College in Miami, Oklahoma.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg
State University in Pittsburg, Kansas and a Master of
Science degree from Henderson State University in
Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Wilson is one of four children raised in Quapaw,
Oklahoma. He is Native American and a member of the
Quapaw Tribe. Wilson is a 2006 graduate of Leadership
Independence and a member of the Independence Optimist
Club. Wilson also serves on the Board of Directors for
the Independence Chamber of Commerce and the Advisory
Board for Independence Public School's Kids Crew. He has
been a featured speaker at many group events including
Upward Bound, Rotary and Lions Club. Wilson's past
achievements include, Kansas Basketball Coaches
Association Achievement Award for 15 years, 2007 ICC Spirit Award
for outstanding community service and recently received
the award again for 2008.
Wilson is married to Jeanne Aust of Tulsa, Oklahoma and
they have twins, a daughter Sheridan and a son Parker.
