Meet...
Margaret Goheen

Literally hundreds of students have passed through her speech and drama classes over the years and Margaret always considered their success in their chosen fields one of the hallmarks of her career.

Margaret E. Goheen, founded The William Inge Theatre Festival in 1983 and was its director until her death in 1990.  She was the speech and drama instructor at Independence Community College from 1946 through 1984.  She had a close acquaintanceship with William Inge, a native of Independence, and was instrumental in organizing the William Inge Special Collections, which are housed in the Library of the college and include original manuscripts, as well as the playwright's extensive library of books and music albums.  The William Inge Theatre Festival was designed to recognize outstanding playwrights and to perpetuate the Inge fame.

Margaret's dedication to the study and appreciation of live theatre was a lifelong passion.  The town of Independence, itself, has demonstrated a dedication to civic theatre as expressed in the performances presented as part of the yearly Neewollah Festival.  Margaret was instrumental in reviving that interest and tradition in the 1950's.  Theatre productions at the College were important civic events throughout her tenure.

She was a natural educator buoyed by her enthusiasm for her passion and she gathered a terrific, supportive following for theatre in the community.

The Margaret Goheen Theatre Scholarship was established by the family and friends of Margaret to honor her lifelong dedication to academic excellence.  Each year a student is awarded this prestigious scholarship based on their contribution to the theatre program above and beyond the minimum requirements of the program and has shown above average leadership and initiative qualities.

The presentation of this award takes place each year during the William Inge Theatre Festival as a tribute to Margaret's dedication.
