Meet...
James Arnwine
Former ICC biology instructor, James E. Arnwine, recalls his path in choosing his lifetime career as a biology teacher.....

When I was a 14 year old high school sophomore attending the McCurtain school system in Eastern Oklahoma, I was fortunate to enroll in a biology course taught by Mr. Charles L. Ford, who was also the superintendent of the McCurtain Schools.  He was the most exciting teacher one could ever encounter.

Mr. Ford was totally responsible for my career choice - teaching biology.  I knew that if I emulated Mr. Ford's methodology of teaching by keeping students interested, then I could become a successful biology teacher.

I taught at the Independence Junior College as it changed names over time to Independence Community Junior College and finally, Independence Community College (ICC).  These name changes over time had no influence on the quality of instruction taking place in the classroom.  Kansas universities have always known that ICC transfer students would be highly successful at their institutions.  This made it easier for our advisors to keep students on their career paths.

Most of my biology students were enrolled in the only science course they would ever take.  I always made sure that they gained an appreciation of their living environment.

After teaching 38 years (7,868 students) at ICC, I retired in 2001.  I was totally surprised at my retirement party when my wife, Cheryl, presented me with my own, James E. Arnwine Biology Scholarship.  She had raised funds by contacting former students, friends, and relatives.

It is really rewarding to present my own ICC Foundation-Endowed Scholarship to a deserving student.

The James E. Arnwine Science Scholarship was established to honor         Mr. Arnwine's 38 years of dedication to ICC students.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who shows special abilities in the areas of biology, chemistry, or physics.  Special consideration is given to students who seek a career in science education.
