Dean's Welcome
Greetings from Peggy Forsberg, Dean
of Instruction
Who are
your heroes? Have you considered
the fact that our heroes are
different from movie stars or
entertainers? Our heroes seem to be
those who inspire us, help us
understand the world better, and who
guide us in discovering great things
about ourselves. We also look to
our heroes as those we can imitate
as we mold our own character,
beliefs, and values. One of my
heroes is Elizabeth “Bess” Truman,
the wife of former President Harry
Truman. Born in Independence
(Missouri, not Kansas!), Mrs.
Truman was known for her warm wit,
her fierce loyalty, and her
down-to-earth way of making others
feel welcome at the White House.
Her biographer, Helen Essary,
describes her as a person who
“existed in her relationships with
family and friends—to her, duty was
a pleasant, everyday word”.
These values speak to me; yours are
your own to discover.
All over the ICC campus, you’ll find
faculty, sponsors, coaches,
administrative staff, and fellow
students who will challenge and
encourage you, whether you’re
participating in an election,
exploring the causes of
international conflict, auditioning
for a play, competing for a
conference championship, or
designing a float for Spirit Week.
You’ll become a vital part of
growing, learning community.
Chances are, you’ll also find your
lifelong heroes right here at
Independence Community College—don’t
be surprised if your success at ICC
makes you a hero to family, friends,
and future Pirates as well! |
